The Running of the Bull is returning to Dewey Beach in all its wacky glory

It's been a wild year, so why not dress up in a red bandana and cowboy hat and run like crazy with a giant cartoon bull on your tail?

If that sounds bizarre, then you're right. But you've also probably never attended Dewey Beach's famous Running of the Bull.

The popular event that draws thousands of visitors to The Starboard and Dewey Beach coastline is back for its 24th year on Saturday, Aug. 21.

And after cancelling last year and postponing until later in the summer this year, the organizers are beyond ready for the shenanigans to begin.

Michael McDonnell, one of the founders of the Bull Run, said in a press release that he couldn’t be more excited.

“One of the more hilarious parts of the Bull Run is seeing the traditional Pamplona attire for the event," he said. "When I look out over the crowd and see a sea of white shirts and red bandanas, it is just such a highlight for me! I feel like I’m right back in Spain!”

The 23rd Annual Running of the Bull was held on Saturday June 29th at the Starboard in Dewey Beach. Hot weather in the 90s limited the amount of runners but festivities still went on with a Kids Bull Run and Music by Kristen and the Noise and DJ Manny Mann.

What to know if you go

Starting at 2 p.m., the famous bull – yes, it's just two guys in a bull costume – will chase participants up the highway and onto the beach. People then run down the coast and back to The Starboard.

The Starboard works with the town to make sure this event is safe, including temporarily shutting down Route 1.

Back at the restaurant and bar, this year's matador will enter the ring and "fight" the bull. Each year, the matador changes, and the 2021 Running of the Bull features local celebrity Dogfish Head Brewery founder Sam Calagione.

Who will win the world's silliest bullfight? You may have to go to find out.

Also back this year is the “Ernest Hemingway Lookalike Contest." If you want a chance to win a prize, The Starboard suggests you start growing your beard now.

McDonnell will judge this contest and give away a Starboard gift certificate to the best looking Hemingway in attendance.

Another reminder: Since this is a fundraiser, a $10 donation is recommended to support the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Department.

Other than that, grab your bandana, Pamplona-style attire and some friends and get ready to celebrate the end of summer in unique Dewey Beach style.
