42-year-old found dead in Wilmington Sunday morning was shot, medical examiner says

A 42-year-old man who was found dead in Wilmington early Sunday morning died from a gunshot wound, an autopsy showed.

Wilmington police were called to the 1200 block of W. Third St. just before 2:30 a.m. after receiving reports "of a possible deceased individual," the department said.

Arriving officers found found Ronald Wright dead but couldn't immediately determine how he died. A medical examiner determined his cause of death was a gunshot wound, police said Monday.

The department has not released any additional details about the shooting, which was the first of two on Sunday.

Officers were also called to the 300 block of W. Ninth St. at about 9:15 p.m. after a 20-year-old was injured in a shooting there.

Police have not said where on the block the incident occurred, but a store at the corner of Ninth and West streets was cordoned off. Its door was wide open and medical equipment was seen being taken into the business.

So far this year, 58 people have been shot in Wilmington, making it the most violent year since 2017 – the city's record year for shootings and killings. A week into June, the number of Wilmington shooting victims ties all those injured in the city last month.
