Crikey! Google honors wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin's birthday

Google is paying tribute to The Crocodile Hunter.

On Friday, the logo on Google's search page honors Steve Irwin, the wildlife conservationist who gained popularity through his TV series "The Crocodile Hunter."

Friday would have been Irwin's 57th birthday.

The doodle is a slideshow featuring illustrations of Irwin searching for crocodiles and feeding the animals while working at the Australia Zoo. 

In the 1970s, Irwin's parents opened a reptile park which Steve Irwin would eventually manage as he got older. The park would become the Australia Zoo, which is where Steve Irwin met his wife, Terri. 

The illustrations also shows Steve with Terri and their kids, Bindi and Robert. Irwin's wife and kids host their own television show on Animal Planet called "Crikey! It's The Irwins!"

Steve Irwin died in 2006 during a snorkeling expedition when a stingray barb pierced his heart.

"Steve Irwin was a loving father and husband who dedicated his life to protecting wildlife and wild places," said Terri Irwin in a statement commemorating Friday's doodle. The Irwin family partnered with Google on the project.

Last year, Irwin was posthumously awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
